After over nine months into its run, the film had earned 16x its debut weekend and ended up making a final gross of $285,761,243, the top-grossing film of its year in North America. The film is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing live-action comedy ever and held the record until it was overtaken by The Hangover Part II in 2011. The film's stunts also created tension for the crew during shooting. Troy Brown and Leon Delaney were stuntmen for Pesci and Stern, respectively. An injury had occurred between Pesci and Culkin during one of the rehearsals for the scene in which Harry tries to bite off Kevin's finger. Pesci said in the People interview, "I did sustain serious burns to the top of my head during the scene where Harry's hat is set on fire."

While he managed himself well, his real talents came when he had to defend his home from a couple of bumbling burglars. But one fan on Reddit has discovered a detail that showed at least one of the parents prioritized a hidden Easter egg over their son. In December 2015, Culkin reprised his role as an adult Kevin McCallister in the inaugural episode of the Jack Dishel web series, "DRYVRS", where a visibly disturbed Kevin recounts his experience of being left home alone by his family. In response to Culkin's video, Daniel Stern appeared in a short video reprising his role as Marv, released in conjunction with Stern's Reddit AMA, where he pleads for Harry to return to help protect him against Kevin's traps. Meanwhile, Harry and Marv finally realize that only Kevin is in the McCallister home, and on Christmas Eve, Kevin overhears them discussing plans to break into the house that night.
The whole book, the illustrations, the font, the text - it's really adorable. I always like to read a Christmas book in July to enjoy some Christmas in July, and this one was perfect! It makes me want to put the movie on, have a pizza delivered, and tell the driver to "Keep the change you filthy animal!". More importantly, however, is the Christmas spirit embodied in the feature—a spirit that perfectly depicts the parts of a wildly imaginative childhood that made growing up so great. Home Alone 3 has long lived in the shadows of its predecessors but this holiday season, let's give it the respect it deserves and add it to the Christmas time binge list.

One star for the pretty illustrations, other than that, it's just a cash grab because of the beloved film. Meanwhile, back at the McCallister home, Kevin thinks that his Christmas wish has come true when he realizes he is alone in the house. He does all of the things he is never allowed to do - bounces on the beds, uses Buzz's BB gun and eats junk food whilst watching gangster movies. However, he is also a little scared by Old Man Marley who lives next door because local myth tells it that the old man murdered his entire family years before; the appearance of him outside his house with a shovel makes Kevin very nervous. Then there is the matter of the Wet Bandits, Hal and Marv, who are in the middle of an inept, but determined, crime spree and are breaking into houses whilst people are away for the holidays.
After being told to go to his room, a power outage during the night caused the family to sleep in and nearly miss their flight. While the McCallisters made it to their flight, they had brought everyone but Kevin and didn't even realize. That said, Kevin's father managed to remember that he may have left the garage open. It was praised for its quotable phrases, morals, traps, and main character.

Apparently the book doesn't do the movie the justice it deserves. It does not have the depth the movie has but the illustrations are so beautiful and very nice to look at. If I had children I would definitely read it to them and - of course - show them the movie since I still think that the movie is much better than the book.

The soundtrack was released by Sony Classical Records on cassette on December 4, 1990, and on CD on May 27, 2015. For the film within a film, Angels with Filthy Souls , shooting took only one day, on the final "test day" prior to the official start of principal photography. To create the illusion that the film was an authentic 1940s gangster film, the scene was filmed on black-and-white negative film, and Johnny's office featured props from that era.

Senta Moses, who played Tracy, recalled in 2020 that one of the most difficult scenes to shoot was the family's run through O'Hare International Airport to catch their flight. While it does not last long, it required several days to film. "There were thousands of extras, all expertly choreographed so none of us would be in danger running at full speed through the American Airlines terminal", she told The Hollywood Reporter. Principal photography took place from February 14, 1990, to May 8, 1990, over a course of 83 days. It was built in the gym and empty swimming pool of the former New Trier High School building, previously used by Hughes for Uncle Buck and Ferris Bueller's Day Off, where the production company had already set up its offices.
They chase Kevin through the house and hang him on the towel hook behind the bathroom door when they catch him but he has already called 911. Kevin escapes the house with the burglars in hot pursuit, but Old Man Marley comes up behind them, knocking them out with a swing of his snow shovel, and taking Kevin home. Eight-year-old Kevin McCallister makes the most of the situation after his family unwittingly leaves him behind when they go on Christmas vacation. But when a pair of bungling burglars set their sights on Kevin's house, the plucky kid stands ready to defend his territory.
The narration is well done and I can see the attention to detail in the illustrations. Favorite scenes from the movie are easy to recognize. The Wet/Sticky Bandits proved to be formidable foes over the course of the first two films, but they were no real Big Bads. The stakes are higher in Home Alone 3, meaning Pruitt's booby traps have to be much more outlandish than those of McCallister's, and that's where the movie comes out swinging. The holiday season has often been filled with festive films that focus on the wonder of Christmas or tie in some way to Santa Claus.
However, there are also others that rely on the family element and remind viewers that there's nothing more important than being with loved ones during Christmas. That said, one film took that concept and turned it on its head in a creative way -- Home Alone. While the film maintained the message and importance of family, it did so in a way never seen before and showed how capable children could be when left alone. That is why I was a little disappointed when I found out that they have left out some of these moments in the childrens book. Especially as a chilrens book I think they would have been better off not leaving out so many funny and great moments.
He turned to Chris Columbus, who had left National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation before shooting started because of a personality clash with starring actor Chevy Chase, who Columbus said treated him "like dirt". Hughes gave him the scripts for both Home Alone and Reach the Rock; Columbus chose to direct Home Alone, as he found it funnier and liked the Christmas theme. Columbus did an uncredited rewrite of the script, which included the character Old Man Marley. He added the character to give the story a more serious layer, as well as a more emotional, happier ending. Home Alone was initially set to be financed and distributed by Warner Bros.
Kevin returns home and rigs the house with booby traps. Harry and Marv break in, spring the traps, and suffer various injuries. While Harry and Marv pursue Kevin around the house, he calls the police and lures the duo into a vacant neighboring house which they had previously broken into. Harry and Marv ambush Kevin and prepare to get their revenge, but Marley intervenes and knocks them unconscious with his snow shovel. The police arrive and arrest Harry and Marv, having identified all the houses that they broke into due to Marv's destructive habit of flooding them.
Inspirational GiftsA sixth film was released digitally on Disney+ on November 12, 2021, titled Home Sweet Home Alone. Devin Ratray, who played Buzz McCallister in the first two films, reprised his role in the film. In Polish, the movie is called Kevin sam w domu (meaning "Kevin home alone"). In Poland the film "Home Alone" became a phenomenon and part of the Christmas tradition.
